solution!

I have no idea why - but all of a sudden today Lotus Notes 8.5.1 FP3 works! I get the preview pane and no more invalid slot numbers.

Honest - I didn't do anything. I didn't download anything, I didn't install anything.

I can only think of two things that might have produced this result.

1) I have a document open in Lotus Symphony for the first time - I usually use Open Office not Symphony.

2) I have the ISA Data Collector open - I figured, why not collect some data on what's happening.

I AM ECSTATIC!!!
